I have been an avid fan of motor sport for years. Formula 1 was the
thing, which really got me interested in this sport. Although I have been
interested in cars since I was a child, I started following Formula 1
actively as late as 1993. I did follow F1 every now and then
before that also, but it really started in 1993. Since then I have only
missed just one or two races.
My motor sport interest soon grew and I started following other motor
sport series as well. Mostly international, but also the Finnish racing.
Today I follow actively F1, Champ Car, World Rally Championship, MotoGP while
keeping in touch with some other series also.
Why do I photograph this sport? I got into it after seeing some great photos in
magazines and books during the years. I thought that as I was interested in
photography already, I might as well try photographying this subject. I tried
and liked it and found it to be pretty challenging. This was in 1997. Since then
I have taken my camera to every race meeting I have been to. Recently I
have been supplying press photos for the Finnish Super 2000 Race organization
as part of a deal with Racing Images.
Photographying motor sport is not an easy thing, it's a special challenge. Every
form of photography is challenging in its own way, of course, but I find motor
sport particulary so. Because you are dealing with fast moving objects almost
the whole time, you really need a lot of practise to get good results. When
shooting a car travelling more than 200 kph you usually don't know how your
picture is going to turn out until you get it developed. That's what makes it
challening. You have to develop certain skills to be able to take the photo you
want and ensure you can do it often enough. I think I have developed my skills
a lot during the years and also my percentage for getting the picture right has
increased. However, I'm still pretty new to this subject and still have a lot
to learn. And as they say in many things you never stop learning...
For me photography is a hobby and a part time job at the moment. My work is
IT and I'm studying computer science at the university. However, I wouldn't
mind working as a photographer full time as well.
